About Us

Books for a Benefit is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a mission to promote a life-long appreciation for reading and intellectual exploration amongst students in Southeast Michigan by providing both books and reading spaces to support their academic pursuits; we aim to address community-identified barriers to academic resources in order to support equitable opportunities in education.

We want all students to have fair opportunity in public education systems. We recognize the importance of reading, and we want to work with kids and their families to help them to utilize reading as a mechanism for success in all of their pursuits. We aim to:

  1. Empower students by giving them an opportunity to engage with books they truly enjoy in order to promote a life-long appreciation for reading.
  2. Address community-identified barriers in academic support to students in the community in order to enhance academic experience.
  3. Ensure students have access to physical spaces to do their work in order to thrive academically.

  • A mutualistic partnership that addresses community-identified needs
  • Cultural humility
  • Sustainability
  • Respect
  • Integrity
  • Community empowerment

Literacy Days

We are committed to building a community of readers through lasting relationships with students. We run day-long workshops in schools across Southeast Michigan in order to promote a love for reading amongst youth. During literacy days, we host a series of mini-workshops talking to students about how to pick books they might like to read, how reading impacts their futures, and more!

Book Redistribution

In an age of technology, physical books are being used a lot less. However, while some in the community can afford to make this shift, there are kids in the community who hardly have the resources to afford a few physical books. We take gently used books from community members and redistribute them to areas that need them most...
